? THOUSANDS of schoolchildren are feasting on junk food and fizzy drinks for breakfast, sparking concerns over Australian childhood obesity.

A study has found that one in 10 12- to 17-year-olds eat chocolate, ice-cream, hot chips, burgers, instant noodles or potato chips as their first meal of the day.

Almost one-third begin with soft drinks or energy drinks.

The statistics suggest healthy eating campaigns have failed to persuade teenagers, because more than half miss breakfast at least once a week. The Age
