Townsend Fires As Daly Runs Out Of Puff

THEY say breakfast is the most important

meal of the day, and Charlestown golfer

Aaron Townsend would agree.

After a storm delay on Thursday, the

27-year-old had to complete five holes of

his first round of the Australian Masters

early yesterday, dropping four shots in the

process to slump to three over par.

But after a 25-minute break in which

he grabbed a piece of toast and a glass

of juice and tried not to break anything

or throw anything at any walls he came

out and equalled the Huntingdale course

record in his second round. His eightunder-

par 64 took him to five under at

the halfway mark and gave him a shot

at what would be his second victory this

month. He won the NSW Open at The

Vintage by seven strokes a fortnight ago.

It was his first major tournament win.

Townsend was baffled by his poor finish

to his first round, although a late finish on

Thursday and very early start yesterday

did not help.

After I had a bit of breakfast, I had

about 20 minutes to have a bit of rest, it

just went good right from the start, he

said. It was a very good feeling.

Townsend said the NSW Open, in which

he shot four rounds in the 60s, gave him a

big shot of confidence.

Ive had a good support group telling

me that I can play at this level, he said.

You dont really believe it until you see

it for yourself.

One man who will not be there for the

weekend is controversial American John

Daly, who shot 73 yesterday to be five

over and miss the cut.
